Beginning, Middle, and Workshop

with The Actors’ Gang Prison Project Alumni

Every Thursday evening, since the first stay-at-home order, The Actors’ Gang Alumni have been gathering in a Zoom room to continue the work they began while incarcerated, creating a new and profound connection with one another. Through courage and joy, they have been addressing all the current challenges—including the lack of community that we have all been facing— and have developed an ensemble that has continued to further the traditions of The Actors’ Gang style while discovering new insight and support for surviving these unprecedented times. On this new stage, the Alumni have developed games, writing prompts, and improvisational exercises for the distance-learning packets that we regularly send through the U.S Postal Service to our incarcerated participants in 13 California State Prisons. They have also been developing a piece that speaks to their experiences with our prison system.

We at The Actors’ Gang feel that the work that they are doing is important and vital and inspirational and are excited that the Alumni have decided to share the work they do by opening their workshops to our audiences, patrons and friends.

The beautiful part is that we don’t know exactly where each workshop will take us, but we suspect that the work that you will witness will not only reflect the stories of our Alumni and those of our brothers and sisters who are still incarcerated in the California prison system, but perhaps your own story as well.

We hope to share the work of our Alumni on stage as soon as we can gather again. Until then, we welcome the approaching spring by opening the workshop and sharing the process with you! We’d be thrilled to see you every other Thursday to witness the vision and the commitment of our Alumni Teaching Artists!
