Engaging Young Minds through Theatre Arts Education

Our Youth Education Theater Programs Department is dedicated to introducing the joy and transformative power of theatre to the diverse youth of Los Angeles and beyond. Our commitment is to provide programs that are vital to unique populations, which empower children and teens to discover, develop and share their individual creative voices. We utilize “The Style”, our signature acting technique, based in the physical and improvisational form of Commedia dell’Arte, in all of our youth programs.

Free Arts Education Programs:

Free After School Programs

For 30 weeks each year, elementary and middle school students of Culver City attend free after school acting workshops in The Actors Gang theatre. Under the guidance and direction of professional actors in the company, each session culminates into an original theatre performance open to family, friends, and the community.   Current schools include: Lindwood Howe, El Rincon, El Marino, La Ballona, Farragut, and Culver City Middle School

Free In-School Programs

For at least 40 weeks each year, The Actors’ Gang provides theatre integration into middle and high school social studies, language arts, and foreign language classes. Teaching Artists work alongside classroom teachers infusing theatre exercises to deepen the connection and understanding of the current curriculum. Students work collectively, bringing the culture and history of the subject matter alive. Current on-going programs:  Culver City Middle School, Le Conte Middle School, APEX High School, STEM Academy, and Culver City High School

Continuation High School Programs

For 24 weeks each year, teaching artists provide workshops to students at area continuation high schools.  These programs provide opportunities for non-traditional and at greater risk students to empower their imaginations, develop empathy, and explore career pathways.  Current on-going programs:  Culver Park, Whitney Young, and Phoenix Continuation High Schools

Theater Classes for Kids and Teens

The Actors’ Gang offers acting classes at the theatre for young people interested in further cultivating their craft as young actors as part of our Youth Education Theater Programs. Experienced, professional Actors’ Gang company members teach all classes.  In addition to learning “The Style”, participants will share 2 special performances of an original theatre piece.

Virtual Saturday Classes

Our Virtual Saturday Classes are designed for children and teens to explore the art of theater-making…FROM HOME! The focus of the class is to provide a safe space for young artists to exercise their imaginations and express themselves creatively.

In addition to playing fun theater games and interacting in warm up activities with our teaching artists, participants will engage in elements of The Actors’ Gang signature Style of theater and explore Commedia dell’Arte characters.

In “The Style”, participants are encouraged to express honest emotions through bold character choices and develop confidence through various writing and drawing exercises, along with fun video performance opportunities.
